Travel: Santorini, Greece

Sensual Santorini, sensual being the operative word, as it is a highly romantic choice for a visit, with an interesting history attached to it. Santorini boasts melting sunsets, beautiful ocean views and the town itself - Fira is outstanding day and night.

Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean and was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, which then shaped its rugged landscape. Plus they say that this is all linked with the mysterious missing Atlantis and who does not love a bit of mystery?

The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its two principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater crater and those beautiful, scenic, never ending ocean views. My boyfriend kept reassuring me that the volcano would not go off, which was brilliantly reassuring whilst walking to dinner one evening.

My partner and I went for one week, which I think is a long enough visit to explore the island. I instantly fell in love with the white washed walls, celtic blue doors and the cobbled lined streets. It is easy to see why this is a romantic destination, with most evenings spent sipping champagne, watching, glowing, amber, sunsets, slowly descend over the crisp, glittering ocean.

Santorini is now viewed as a trendy, serene, destination, and it certainly shows with its appearance, restaurants and the shops; Versace, DVF and Cartier to name a few. You can spend hours, slowly meandering the small streets, looking at the glamorous stores and bars.

There is a great array of luxury hotels, villas and apartments, some if you are lucky enough with infinity pools overlooking the sea - perfect for those Instagram shots. The food is outstanding, with a large choice of restaurants, bars and cafes to enjoy, with a huge percentage of them boasting great views of the surroundings.

Santorini is an incredibly, relaxing place and easy to get around. My partner and I hired ATV’s (quad bikes) for the day for around £30.00 (30 euros) which is quite a reasonable price when we realised it was for a full twenty-four hours. Not only was it great fun but we were able to see the nearby towns of Oia, Imerovigli and Katerina - as we stayed in Fira, all in that day.

If you are looking for slightly more to do, I would suggest staying in the elegant, vibrant, small town of Fira. If you do/are staying in Fira, everything is walkable, although ladies I suggest taking sensible flats with you, there are cobbles everywhere and lets face it no one wants a broken ankle, no matter how amazing those Sophia Webster shoes are!

The weather was incredible, from April - September it is hot, we went only a couple of weeks ago at the beginning of May and temperatures were in the early twenties. It was blissful, compared to the rainy, cold, drab days we had left behind us in England.

I can safely say that I was incredibly sad to leave, it completely captured my heart. For a long time I have not felt so content. I will miss my morning coffees looking out to sea, watching the cruise ships come in and the donkeys climbing the steps, with their beautiful, coloured saddles.

Until next time Santorini, ευχαριστώ.
